SSLPost Delivery Methods

There are a number of established delivery methods used to send 'point to point' emails. Below is an overview of the those established delivery methods shown in comparison to the delivery methods offered by SSLPost. Under each option we have included important information about their various features, benefits and potential shortcomings of each delivery method.

Please note that the blue ‘click’ icon representations you see on the diagrams below could be either a single click or a double click depending on your choice of email client. We have found that on most web based email clients (Google, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc) it will be a single click and on most desktop based email clients (Microsoft Outlook, Windows Live, etc) it will be a double click.

Standard SMTP Email

Standard SMTP emails are sent to the recipient unencrypted and can be easily intercepted and read by a third party during transit. The sender has no indication as to whether the email has been opened unless they send a ‘read receipt’ request to the recipient. This read receipt is not a fool proof solution as it is the recipient who has the choice whether to notify the sender they have read the email.

Standard Email Marketing

Standard email marketing messages are sent to the recipient unencrypted and can be easily intercepted and read by a third party during transit. The email marketing software platform does however allow the sender to see whether the message has been successfully delivered by checking the MX domain record which will indicate the delivery as successful, unsuccessful or bounced. Email marketing solutions use ‘web beacons’ (tiny 1px images) to ascertain whether an email has been opened by the recipient - when the recipient opens the message, the tracking image is referenced and recorded by the email marketing platform.

This solution is not fool proof as it requires the recipient to allow all external images to be downloaded with their emails (a setting that can be switched off and on in most in most email clients). All email marketing solutions allow the sender to add trackable hyperlinks to their emails so that when a recipient clicks on one of these links in their email the click can be recorded by by the email marketing platform and shown to the user.

SSLPost Recorded Delivery (Embedded Hyperlink)

SSLPost recorded delivery emails are sent to the recipient unencrypted and can be intercepted and read by a third party during transit. These SSLPost emails allow the sender to see whether the message has been delivered by checking the MX domain record which will indicate the delivery as successful, unsuccessful or bounced. The sender will only use this solution to send links to stored files and as such trackable hyperlinks are only added so that SSLPost can record the recipient’s access to these files.

SSLPost Recorded Delivery (HTML Attachment)

These SSLPost emails are sent to the recipient with an HTML attachment which once opened allow the recipient to access the encrypted message over a secure SSL link. The SSLPost emails also allow the sender to see whether the message has been delivered by checking the MX domain record which will indicate the delivery as successful, unsuccessful or bounced.

The sender will get an accurate record of the time and date that the secure message was accessed once the user clicks the link contained within the HTML message attachment which eliminates the requirement to use the alternative ‘web beacon’ solution. In addition trackable hyperlinks can be placed within the email body or the HTML attachment and clicks can be reported back to the sender.
